Virginia Grise began writing a farm for meme at the onset of the pandemic, over 25 years since the LA rebellion, not knowing we would be in the midst of another rebellion in this country sparked by the police killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade and George Floyd. a farm for meme has become a conversation with the present moment of both pandemic and rebellion. The current movement in defense of Black Lives and to defund the police creates opportunities for us to really prioritize the needs of our communities. How do we build and sustain healthy communities? How do we dream when our communities are under attack?
The very foundation of theatre is imagining, building and creating worlds together. Grise is currently the Mellon Foundation Playwright in Residence at Cara Mia and plans on focusing the rest of her three-year residency on creating spaces for and with community to imagine, create and dream together.
